Tom Uhlman

Thomas M. Uhlman is a Founder and Managing Partner of New Venture Partners LLC, a venture capital firm formed as a result of the spinout of Lucent Technologies’ New Ventures Group in December, 2001. From 1997-2001, Tom began and was President of the New Ventures Group. During the 1997-2012 time period, Uhlman and his colleagues have created over 60 new technology businesses. New Venture Partners has had $730 million of capital under management during this period. The team’s first 2 funds created $750 million in equity value on $280 million of invested capital. In 2006 the firm began investing a new, $300 million fund.

Uhlman has served on the boards of 15 portfolio companies and currently is board chair of the iBiquity Digital Corporation. From 1998 until it was acquired in 2007, Uhlman served on the board of McData Corporation (NASDAQ) and chaired its compensation committee for 7 years. Earlier he was one of the founders of the Washington, D.C. based Council on Competitiveness as well as having co-chaired the New Jersey Governor’s High Technology Task Force with the President of Princeton University. In 2002, he was the recipient of the New Jersey Technology Council’s “Financier of the Year” award.

Uhlman received a Sloan Masters degree from Stanford University’s School of Business. He also holds a doctorate in Political Science from the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill where he received an award for the best U.S. doctoral dissertation in the field of law. He received his bachelor’s degree in Political Science from the University of Rochester. Uhlman is a Trustee of the Community Foundation of New Jersey and its incoming board chair. He also serves on the boards of the College of Arts and Sciences’ Foundation at UNC and the Madison Area YMCA where he is also the board chair.
